4 ways to stay connected during your first trip to Japan

For many not under Sprint or T-Mobile’s international free roaming plans, I am offering some helpful tips for you to stay connected during your first trip to Japan:

1.)Sim Cards

You can get your SIM card at the airport, or go to Bic Camera to purchase what you need. Big tourist hubs in Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, and Shibuya should always have some English-speaking staff around to help you.

Below is a link to various locations throughout Japan in English:

2.)Pocket Wifi

Another alternative is to get what the Japanese call a pocket wi-fi. You can basically rent these portable routers at either the airport or with major carriers such as NTT Docomo, AU, or Softbank. You’ll be able to find many of these phone shops near any station.

Your Airbnb might even provide you a complimentary one for staying with them as well. Just check with the owner if one is included as part of your stay.

Although for the more budget conscious traveler, Tokyo Cheapo  does a good job of showing where you can find more affordable pocket wifis.

3.)  Subway Stations (Tokyo Metro)

The subway also provides wi-fi for travelers. While it is more expensive commuting using the subway than with the trains, you do get the benefits of using free wifi wherever you go. Get an all-day pass if you want to save money, and plan to use the service all day.

4.)Other Free Wifi Spots

If there are a lot of tourists, there will always be a Mcdonalds and Starbucks nearby. A majority of popular restaurants and cafes should have what you’re looking for, but if you do find yourself not wanting to go inside these places; there are areas in Shibuya, Ginza, Omotesando, Asakusa, and more where you can just simply connect while walking around.
